Girl Scouts from Hall County gathered Sunday at the Martha Hope Cabin to share stories, pictures, s’mores and campfire songs, and reconnect with other members of the organization. The anniversary isn't until next year, technically, but today is the founder, Juliette Gordon-Low's, birthday. Which is also often celebrated by Girl Scouts around the country!
The story of little Bobby Montoya came to light earlier this week, when his mom told a Denver TV station that Bobby's request to join his older sister in the venerable all-girl organization was denied. I definitely don't agree with the so-called "Fair & Balanced" Fox News pundits that chime in at the end of the article about this being "child abuse" but I do think it presents an interesting dilemma regarding equality. Girls can be Boy Scouts because of a stink thrown about gender inequality in the 80s or 90s. But to this day boys can't be girl scouts.
While I think it's perfectly okay for boys to play with dolls and girls to play with trucks if they want, I do feel like boys should stick to boy scouts and girls should stick to girl scouts and both organizations should do what they can to foster gender equality through the activities they offer the kids.
All that aside, if a transgender kid identifies as a girl and the parents are supporting that and raising him as a girl, "she" should be in Girl Scouts. Same if a girl were identifying as a boy and the parents were raising her as a boy, "he" should be accepted into Boy Scouts. Light On Organization's 'Inclusive' Policies | Fox News
My 2 cents.
The organization is updating the skills as its 100th anniversary nears.
I'm torn on this... I'm slightly sad to see the old badges go since they were such a strong part of my own childhood and being a Girl Scout for 12 years. I support the addition of the new badges though. I am somewhat set at ease... I'd heard that GS were getting rid of badges altogether, so it's good to know they're just updating them to fit in with our modern age.
